Most stuffed animals can be washed in the washing machine, but we’ll also share how to hand-wash them.
Washing stuffed animals in the washer:
- Place the stuffed animal in a mesh laundry bag or zippered pillowcase for added protection against wear and tear.
- Choose gentle wash settings
- Add detergent
- Air dry
Washing stuffed animals by hand:
- Soak in cold water
- Add detergent
- Gently squeeze the stuffed animal to saturate it with detergent. Don’t scrub too hard!
- Rinse
- Air dry
To dry a plush toy after hand-washing it, drain the sink and press down gently on the stuffed animal several times to push out as much water as you can, then roll it up in a clean dry towel, which will pull out more water.
Allow the toy to air dry, using the lowest heat setting on a hair dryer to fluff up the animal if needed.
A little dirt or stain can mean a lot of love in a child’s favorite stuffed animal. Take this into mind when thinking about washing a stuffed animal. Only wash them thoroughly when necessary. This is especially important if the plushie is well-worn or very old. Some plush toys may not survive a heavy wash. Washing stuffed animals is easy if you follow these helpful tips, but you always run the risk of damage. If there’s no danger, a tiny bit of wear and tear can add to their charm.
